Election Issues: Gay Marriage

The Issue

There are many important issues being discussed during the current presidential elections.  This semester, we're going to be exploring the "election issues" that are most important to us.  We're starting by looking at Gay Marraige and Gay Rights, in general. 

We wanted to consider this issue because we know that many people are afraid of homosexuals. Here are some reasons we think people are scared of homosexuals. One reason is that some people are scared because they think gay people might want to rape or to have some sort of sexual relation with them. We generally call this homophobia. Another reason is because of the religious beliefs of the church. Some churches say that God made a woman and a man not a man with a man or woman with woman. But when churches say this, it can divide the religious from the secular people.

Gay Marriage - The Stats, Dude (& Dude-ettes)

We asked over 130 people the following two questions:

1. Do you support gay marriage? Overwhelmingly, people said "yes," they support gay marriage (54%).

 

2. Do you have any friends or family who are gay?  Again, most people said that they had friends or family who were gay (62%).

We also asked everyone their age to see if young people and older people answered differently.  Here's what we learned.

With the first question, "do you support gay marriage?," support for gay marriage was basically the same for each group (look at the blue part of the bars).

With the second question, "do you have any friends or family members who are gay?," more teenagers (13-19 years old) answered "yes" than any other age group (look at the blue part of the bars).

Gay Marriage - Links on the Web

We looked around to see the web to see what news and opinions we could find about gay rights.

• Obama said that he personally does not believe in gay marriage but does think that gay and lesbian people should be treated with respect and the state should not discriminate against them.
• Facts about Hate Crimes based on Sexual Orientation, including the percentage rate of crimes from 1995 to 2004.
  Here's a video of former presidential Republican presidential candidate Sam Brownback giving his opinion about why should there shouldn't be gay marraige.
• Ellen DeGeneres gives an emotional talk about the murder of gay 15-year-old boy who was killed for asking another 8th grader to be his valentine.
• McCain basically says that it should be up to the states to decide what to do about gay marraige.
• Huckabee said that he was disappointed when the Arkansas Supreme Court rejected a ban on gay foster parents
• Advisors think that Clinton might endorse civil unions but probably not gay marriage.
